Dexter: Original Sin takes a bold gamble by going back to Dexter Morgan’s formative years and offering a new look at his dark passenger.
One of the series’ greatest assets is its casting
While some prequels have stumbled under the weight of established canon, Original Sin succeeds in a big way, enriching the Dexter mythology while providing a standalone story. Patrick Gibson, though initially a questionable choice, steps into the role of young Dexter, capturing a signature blend of social awkwardness and chillingly calculated violence. Molly Brown shines as Deb, giving the younger version of the character a fiery spirit and a vulnerability that resonates deeply. The supporting cast, including Alex Shimizu as Masuko and James Martinez as Batista, also give strong performances that effectively capture the essence of their original counterparts.
Original Sin is not without its faults
However, Christian Slater feels a little off as Harry, as he struggles to fully embody the character’s inner conflicts. The series cleverly weaves together familiar elements from the original Dexter, including iconic musical cues and visual motifs, while also exploring new territory. The story of Harry’s deceased son adds a layer of complexity to Dexter’s origin story, though it occasionally veers into melodramatic territory. The central mystery surrounding Dexter’s current situation in Iron Lake provides a compelling path that keeps the tension high throughout the season.
The pacing can be uneven, with some episodes feeling rushed while others drag
The heavy reliance on licensed music occasionally clashes with the show’s darker themes. And while the CGI has generally improved since the first episode, some scenes still suffer from noticeable visual effects issues. Despite these shortcomings, Dexter: Original Sin is a worthwhile addition to the Dexter universe. It’s a darkly entertaining exploration of Dexter’s past that offers a fresh perspective on his transformation into the Bay Harbor Butcher.

While it may not completely satisfy all fans, especially those who were disappointed by New Blood, Original Sin offers enough suspenseful moments, strong performances, and intriguing twists to keep viewers on the edge of their seats until the bloody end.
